Zirconia Crowns in Guangzhou: Materials, Cost and Fit (2026 Guide)
Last updated: 2026-09-18
A crown is a cap that covers a damaged or root-treated tooth so you can chew on it again. The material it is made from changes the price, the look and how long it tends to last. In Guangzhou the two options patients most often compare are zirconia (a strong all-ceramic) and porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM).
This guide explains what each material is for, what a zirconia crown costs here, and the practical steps from digital scan to final fit.
Zirconia, PFM and metal crowns compared
The short version: zirconia looks natural and is very strong; PFM is cheaper but can show a dark metal line at the gum; full-metal is the most durable but looks nothing like a tooth.
| Material | Strength | Appearance | Typical price per unit (Guangzhou) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zirconia (all-ceramic) | High | Very natural, tooth-like | ¥1,000 – 3,000 (about US$140 – 420) | Back teeth, visible teeth, bruxism |
| PFM (porcelain fused to metal) | High | Good, but possible grey line | ¥800 – 2,000 (about US$110 – 280) | Back teeth on a budget |
| Full metal | Very high | Metallic | ¥600 – 1,500 (about US$85 – 210) | Rarely chosen; strong but unaesthetic |
| E-max (lithium disilicate) | Medium | Excellent translucency | ¥1,500 – 3,000 (about US$210 – 420) | Front teeth where looks matter most |
E-max is a different all-ceramic often used on front teeth because it lets more light through. Zirconia is the general-purpose choice because it handles heavy chewing without looking artificial.
When zirconia is the right call
Zirconia earns its price in three situations:
- Back teeth and molars. These take the heaviest bite force. Zirconia resists cracking better than older ceramics.
- Night grinding (bruxism). If you grind or clench, a softer ceramic is more likely to chip. Zirconia is the usual recommendation.
- A metal-free preference. Some patients want no metal in the mouth. Zirconia is metal-free.
For a small front tooth where translucency matters most, the clinic may suggest E-max instead. Ask the dentist to explain why a particular material suits your tooth before you agree.
Brand and origin differences
Crown materials and the blocks they are milled from come from different manufacturers. You will hear names such as VITA, Ivoclar and 3M, alongside Chinese and Korean brands. In practice:
- The brand of the block affects the cost more than the appearance.
- The origin of manufacture (whether the crown is milled in-house or by an external lab) affects turnaround time and consistency.
- In-house milling with CAD/CAM can often be finished the same day.
Do not fixate on a brand name. The more useful questions are who mills the crown, what warranty comes with it, and whether the clinic can show you previous work.
Digital scanning and CAD/CAM
Many Guangzhou clinics now take an intraoral digital scan instead of a putty impression. A small camera maps the prepared tooth, and the design is produced on a screen. Benefits:
- No gag-inducing impression trays.
- The scan can be re-taken quickly if the fit is unclear.
- The crown is designed and milled by computer, which improves consistency.
The scan file can also be stored and reused if you ever need a replacement crown later. Ask whether your file will be kept.
Can it be done in one visit?
Sometimes, but not always:
- Same-day CAD/CAM is possible if the clinic mills on site and the tooth needs no other treatment. Expect several hours in the chair, with the milling and firing happening between appointments.
- Two visits are more common when a lab is involved or when the tooth needs a root canal or core build-up first. The first visit prepares the tooth and fits a temporary crown; the second fits the final one.
- Multiple visits are needed if there is infection to resolve or gum treatment before the crown.
Plan your trip around a written treatment plan. If you only have a few days in Guangzhou, tell the clinic your return date and ask whether a same-day option is realistic for your case.
Colour matching
A crown should match the teeth next to it, not the ones you wish you had. The clinic shades the crown against your natural teeth:
- For front teeth, the dentist will often show you a shade tab in natural light.
- For back teeth, the match matters less because they are rarely seen.
- If you plan to whiten later, whiten before the crown is made, so the crown is matched to the final, lighter colour.
If you are unhappy with the shade, say so at the try-in stage, before the crown is cemented. That is the moment a change is easy.
Bite adjustment
A crown that is even slightly high will hurt when you chew and can damage the opposing tooth. After the crown is placed:
- The dentist checks the bite with marking paper and adjusts the high spots.
- You will be asked to bite and grind on the paper several times.
- Tell the clinic immediately if the crown still feels high after the anaesthetic wears off.
A well-adjusted crown should feel like a normal tooth within a day or two. Persistent pain on biting is a reason to return.
Chipping and warranty
No crown material is unbreakable. Zirconia is strong but can still chip, and the porcelain layer on a PFM crown can chip away from the metal underneath. When you compare quotes, ask two questions:
- What does the warranty cover, and for how long?
- Is the warranty in writing, and what voids it?
Warranty terms are set by each clinic and vary. Some cover remakes for fit problems, some do not cover damage from grinding or accidents. Get the terms written down, not just spoken.
Price ranges in Guangzhou
Expect to pay roughly ¥1,000–3,000 (about US$140–420) per zirconia crown in Guangzhou. PFM crowns are a step cheaper. Compare this with typical overseas ranges where a single ceramic crown commonly runs US$800–2,000.
A crown is usually quoted per unit. If you need a root canal first, that is a separate line item, and so is a post or core build-up if the tooth is heavily broken down. Ask for an all-in quote so you are not surprised later.
What to ask if a crown fails
If a crown feels loose, keeps hurting, or chips after you get home:
- Ask the clinic whether the issue is covered under the written warranty.
- Send photos and, if possible, an X-ray from your local dentist.
- Ask whether a remake is possible remotely and who pays for it.
- If you cannot return, find out what a local dentist should know about the material used.
Keep your records — the scan file, the shade name and the warranty document all help if something needs to be redone.
